On December 27, 1892, a locomotive train on the Hamilton to Glasgow line became a runaway, bypassing Hamilton West and Blantyre stations. The driver, inexperienced and misreading the timetable, mistakenly believed the next stop was Newton. Passengers were picked up later, causing significant delays, as those at Blantyre arrived well after schedule.
