On Saturday 20th March 1937, the Dundee Courier reported the story of the David Livingsone Memorial Centre deciding to open on Sundays (then most definitely not the done thing!). The report as follows: “The Scottish national memorial to David Livingstone, famous missionary and explorer, at Blantyre, Lanarkshire, is to be opened to the public on […]

How Blantyre Mills nearly failed
I’ve been looking at Blantyre Village Works Mills in some detail this week. A subject that is well covered in other publications, but one which I’ve not posted often about. What I read both surprised me and educated me. Pictured first is a previously unpublished photo of Blantyre Works Mills taken allegedly in 1904 (though […]
1970 Blantyre Cine Footage
During mid December 2014, I was approached by Eoan Kerr, asking if he could share his 1970 Blantyre cine footage with Blantyre Project. This little edit shows the relevant part of his footage with is shown here with permission. Featured is Bothwell Bridge and the older 1952 – 1999 David Livingstone Memorial Bridge. Hope this […]
1895 David Livingstone Coin
Pictured here is an 1895 David Livingstone Coin. Made of bronze, Allan Wyon was the Sculptor and the coin features David Livingstone, 1813 – 1873. It was circulated in Africa and Scotland and later at Blantyre at David Livingstone Centre (birthplace). If you have one tucked away in a drawer, its worth over £100!
1903 Shuttle Row, Low Blantyre
I recently bought this rarely seen photo. Everyday life captured in 1903 at Shuttle Row, the birthplace of David Livingstone 90 years earlier. A child plays on the steps, women stand at the door, on what is clearly a breezy day. Leaves pile up against the circular washhouse doorway, the washing on the line blowing […]
The Rain Shelter
I think these photos were taken in the 1960s, but haven’t got an exact date. This is the end of the Rain Shelters at David Livingstone Memorial Centre. Located at the treeline, beyond the field, this small building offered a safe an dry haven for any visitors caught outside whilst the rain came on. Its […]
1929 The Rose Garden
In the 1930’s if you asked somebody in Blantyre, “Have you seen the Rose Garden?“, everybody would know exactly where you meant. Today, not so much. Pictured here in 1929, in what I believe to be a previously unpublished photo online is Blantyre’s beautifully tended Rose Garden. This small terraced garden was incredibly well kept, […]
