1982 Elm Street

It’s hard to believe but this was almost 40 years ago. The photo was taken on 13th July 1982 at Elm Street at its junction with the developing Glasgow Road. The flats are on the right hand side, now part of Elm Court.

Town planners clearly had a look and feel for the new Glasgow Road. Beige Brick buildings in similar style to the new Sports Centre and St Andrews Church. The small brick walls, rather than railings similar to the landscaped park and an effort to beautify the place by planting trees and lawns, something not seen along Glasgow Road junctions before.

You can see John Street Houses in the background and some figures struggle to carry their shopping. This was before Devlin Grove was built. You can see how it looks today in the more modern photo.
