This illustration dates from 1778 and shows in some detail the ruins of Bothwell Castle. Pictured from the inside, the scene is not too different today.
Bothwell Castle’s construction started c1245 but wasn’t finished by the wars of Independence. It fell out of use c1645. It was used as a walled garden for the new Bothwell Castle after that and is today, a tourist attraction.

Blantyre Project incredible to think this was a ruin, even in Jacobean times.
Jessie Caldow I lived not too far from Bothwell and the castle was a favorite place to visit when we went on Sunday walks. Visited it a few years ago on a trip with my family. The Grandchildren loved it! Thanks for this reminder of happy times.
