1979 Stonefield Parish Church Fire

1979 Stonefield Parish Church

Another remarkable photo from 1979. This time showing the brave firemen at the top of Stonefield Parish Church on Glasgow Road after it burned down in September of that year. The photographer must surely have used a lens on his camera to capture this scene.

Betty McLean It was a lovely church many people gathered Christmas Eve and I remember a full church.
Andrena Black It was a lovely church
Marian Maguire One of the firemen on the roof that day was my husband.
Lynne McEwan A workman repairing a leak in the roof left his blowtorch running when he went for lunch I believe.  This was my first major job as a cub reporter at the Hamilton Advertiser. My suggested headline of ‘Holy Smoke’ was rejected as being irreverent
