1960s High Blantyre Industrial Estate

Continuing our look this week at Sanny McVicars excellent cine videos of Blantyre during the 1960s’ Sanny’s cine reels were converted by Blantyre Project and with his permission shared here for you all to see.

Today, we’re looking at High Blantyre Industrial Estate, out with the dog, looking across to the timber houses and homes at High Blantyre.

Elizabeth Grieve That’s before the expressway was built

Blantyre Project likely late 1960s. Prefabs look like they’re all but cleared and county buildings in the background (opened 1964). The same reel has the expressway being built up near Crossbasket, so i’d guess about 1967.

Jean Boyle That’s my brother Jim Lowe on the film with Sanny, it’s so good to see this as Jim passed away a few years ago and we miss him so much, thanks Sanny xx

Blantyre Project thank you Jean. It’s good to be able to put peoples names to these films.

John Crothers Is this the same sanny mcvicar who went to Calder street school with me

Carole Mackie Rickard I think there’s a glimpse of my Dads garage at 1:1:22
Robert McLeod-Wolohan i remember it very well, i worked in c.r.s. transport right at the top of the industrial estate, but that would have been late 70s or early 80s, but before that i remember all the busses lined up the side streets waiting to take the miners to their collieries.

  1. Brings back memories. The estate canteen was up the hill at the back. About where the dog is being walked. I think from 58 years ago!
