Summer in 1891 in Lanarkshire was a warm one! Water became scarce and after a particularly dry spell in May 1892, nearly a year later, residents and authorities in Blantyre were worried again about scarcity and drought.
A drought was only narrowly averted by the arrival of rainfall that May but not before Colonel John Clark Forrest was called upon in Low Blantyre to open his “fine old well” at the Toll. In a location we would know today as the Stonefield Public Park.
