On 7th May 1892, the Hamilton Advertiser reported on the farming status in Blantyre stating, “It has been many a year since the grasses showed so badly. The threatened scarcity of any grass or hay must be terrifying the cowfeeders and 2 proposals are being made. 1. That a rebate be made for the present contracts for grass and 2. that future grass landlords make some provision to guarantee they will supply grass, regrdless of the failure of their crops!
I’m sure this wasnt the last time farmers were worried about dry spells and the lack of hay so late on in the season.
