Exploring Sproul’s Boot and Shoe Warehouse in 1892 Blantyre

I’ve been looking at Victorian businesses in Blantyre in July 1892.

Sproul’s was a boot and show warehouse located at the Cross, High Blantyre. Adverts of that summer suggested, repairs to footwear were done on the premises offering a cobblers service, as well as the sale of new footwear for men, women and children.

I was trying to work out where the business may have been located and think it was likely around the entrance to School Lane area or the top of Hunthill Road. This was a time whilst the adjacent Parish Church halls were being built.

Sprouls advert suggested the shop was old and established and indeed the surname Sproul can be traced back to the 1860s in High Blantyre. Sprouls were a presence in Blantyre, also having a branch shop at Stonefield Road during that same year, over 134 years ago!
