The Butcher’s Wagon, 1892

A little story from Blantyre in 1892. On Tuesday 8th November 1892, while Mr Gilbert Stewart, flesher, was driving a horse and barrow along the main Glasgow Road at Stonefield. Nearing his destination, he quickly turned the corner of the street leading to the slaughter-house when suddenly the wheel caught the kerbstone, upsetting the vehicle, and throwing the occupants to the street.

Mr Stewart, who was previously lame in the left leg, had it again broken. The ambulance van was quickly summoned, and the injured man was removed to his home.

  1. I think this maybe a great great uncle of mine as The Stewart Family Butcher shop was run by my Grand Dad’s father and uncles. The store was in 46 Glasgow St. Burnbank. Gilbert was one of the uncles. Malcolm (G/Dad) open a store somewhere in the area in 1920s I believe
