Cycling Club Conversazione, 1892

In the Hamilton Herald and Lanarkshire Weekly News on Friday 11th November 1892, this article appeared describing a Blantyre organisation having a night out.

“On Tuesday evening the Blantyre Cyclists’ third annual conversazione came off in Struthers’ Masonic Hall, High Blantyre, with great éclat.

The hall was prettily done up with curtains, etc., while plants relieved the sombre appearance of the hall windows. Over thirty couples took part in the dance; music was given by Bergman’s popular band. During the evening a running buffet was conducted by Mrs Struthers in her usual recherche style. For the musical part the company were indebted to Miss Chalmers, Miss Lizzie Chalmers, and Messrs William Smith, R. Brodie, and Gilbert Pitcairn.”

I’ve probably taken a keener interest in stories about the Masonic Hall on Main Street, as it’s just outside my driveway. I like the use of the reporters language and descriptions, with words you don’t often see in modern publications.

Pictured, nearly 30 years later around 1920 is a cyclist in Auchentibber, we think near the War Memorial.
