News from November 1892

On Friday 11th November 1892, the Hamilton Herald provided a newspaper column running together loads of little snippets to fill some local news. Here’s some of the stories from Blantyre that week.

The Ambulance Association discovered to their sorrow that they would have to pay a shilling to hire the school room for their meetings. This organisation was annoyed to discover also that they were being charged 15 shillings in backdated hire fees, when all along that year they had thought the meeting room in the school was being provided free during those evenings.

Congratulations were publicly offered to ‘Old McKendrick’ of Auchentibber who the paper joked had become the ‘Provost of Auchentibber’ through inheriting the whopping sum of £35,000. (about £6m in todays money!). The paper hoped it was true and wished him well.

The Blantyre merchants dance was being planned and invites had started to go out. However, some merchants were yet to receive theirs and were concerned in case they were overlooked!

A rumour was circulating that additional gas lamps were to be put on Blantyre’s main roads. This was causing annoyance as the rumour was that 2d on each 1000 cubic feet of gas was being put on to defray the cost of the installation. Mr Scott, the gas manager at Stonefield Road denied any of it was true.
