Drama at Clydesdale Bank, 1986

In May 1986, Blantyre witnessed a dramatic, Hollywood-style armed robbery when a silent gun gang struck outside the Clydesdale Bank on Glasgow Road, snatching £40,000 in a daring daylight raid.

Within seconds, the masked gang pinned down security guards, one threatened with a gun to his head, another with a pickaxe handle, before fleeing in a Ford Cortina. Their high-speed getaway through Blantyre saw them smash into parked cars and even overturn a roadsweeper’s cart.

Days later, the empty cash case was found dumped in the River Clyde at Oatlands, sparking a police plea for witnesses to trace the elusive thieves. The guards, though unhurt, were left shaken, while detectives suspected the same gang of a previous £15,000 raid nearby.

This infamous case remains a striking memory of crime in Blantyre’s history, reminding us how swiftly calm streets could turn to chaos.
