Capture of an Escaped Prisoner, 1892

On Saturday 24th December 1892, Police captured escaped prisoner Pete Brogan who had escaped from their clutches in the previous October.

Brogan had been arrested at Whistleberry for an indecent assault and a Blantyre and Bothwell constable was conveying him from Blantyre over to Bothwell that Autumn. As the trio crossed a fence, one of the constables got caught on some wire, and Brogan used this as his opportunity to flee at pace.

It was thought he was in Glasgow, but he had quite outwitted capture until a couple of months later. Not content with letting the assault go unpunished, the young woman, the victim in this story pulled on all her resources and contacts and together with the assistance of the police, turned up at the accused place of residence in Glasgow, along with a warrant and the protection of the officers. Police then lay in wait until Brogan returned and he was promptly arrested on Christmas Eve.
