A rare, aerial photo from 1980, some 43 years ago and a time before drone photography.
This sky view is of the Nairoo, down the Cawther, on land owned by Hugh Smith. There were many people staying there at the time and for previous decades.
The photo was sent in recently by Samantha Docherty, whose partner’s grandfather was Hugh.
Samantha told me, “Papa Hugh fell ill and people set it on fire. It was a wee community. He let homeless people from Blantyre stay there. Years ago, after the caravans were gone, in winter people went ice skating on the land.”
What’s your memories of Niaroo (just off the Peth Brae)?
