Pictured just before the Millennium in rare aerial photo is the David Livingstone Birthplace, or David Livingstone Centre as it was known then.
The photo was arranged by Neil Gordon and appears in his book just after the Millennium. Seen here for the first time in high resolution colour, you can see the building had been recently whitewashed and how pretty and well kept the gardens were. This looks a summer scene and show the former configuration of the Africa Pavilions in the background, buildings which were recently renovated just before the pandemic.
Shuttle Row is now over 230 years old, and of course listed. It remains one of Blantyre’s oldest buildings and though it has been plagued with some dampness issues even in modern times, the recent multi million pound renovation will mean it will likely be there for hundreds more years!
