A kind Blantyre Project reader, Henrik bought this watch several years ago on eBay and has shared the pictures here. Wanting to know more he googled it and ended up on Blantyre Project website.
The watch was presented to schoolboy Robert Laird, for 5 years perfect attendance at Low Blantyre School. (Ness’s School at the corner of Victoria Street and Glasgow Road).
I like to add a little more to photos that are sent in and so looked into Robert Laird.
Robert Craw Laird was born on 13th March 1917 at 5 Stonefield Road (beside Valerio’s Cafe). The son of Alexander Laird, a coalman and Helen (Nellie) Laird. He would have started school by 1922 and clearly he was a model pupil, always attending, perhaps a reflection also on his parents.
It would have been a proud moment being presented with this watch for his exemplary attendance. Robert died in Langholm in 1999 after living a long life, aged 81.
