1980 Rewarding Sporting Champions

In 1980, a sports champion of the past, Mr John McLuskey stood proudly with Blantyre’s potential sporting champions of the future.

John, a former British fly weight Boxing champion came to Blantyre Miner’s Welfare on the evening of Friday 22nd August 1980 to hand over prizes to the best sportsmen and women Blantyre had to offer.

John was a good choice for master of ceremonies for the Miner’s Welfare was also known for its attachment to youth boxing, the club there well known to many. The awards were presented to Blantyre’s youngsters to acknowledge their sporting achievements in the previous 12 months.
