1910’s Bothwell Castle

Fantastic photo of Bothwell old ruins and former Bothwell House. Dating from around 1910, this photo celebrates “old and new”, although little did anybody know that the grand house would only last just over another decade, before being demolished in the 1920’s.

The River Clyde (and Blantyre) is just out the picture to the right.

Featuring Blantyre Project Social Media with permission. Strictly not for use by others on or offline, our visitors said:

Archie Peat Presumably the house suffered the same fate as Hamilton Palace……..underground subsidence due to mining operations ?
Sandy Hazeltine Archie Peat I hope not, they’ve built a load of new houses on that land now!
Archie Peat Whereas the surveyors who built the Castle built on a solid rock promontory by the river. Incidentally having lived in Blantyre for 23years I dont ever remember evidence in the area of a large sandstone quarry from which the Castle and the Priory were built ?
Blantyre Project redlees nearby does have a large red sandstone quarry, but i don’t know where the castle or Priory originated from.
