The Queen of Lanarkshire’s Cabaret circuit Helen McBennet, crowned the Queen of Blantyre Miner’s Welfare Gala day in July 1979, nine year old Sandra Clelland.
More than 500 people turned up to watch the crowning ceremony and joined in the procession that snaked through the streets of Blantyre afterwards that particular Saturday.
For the children of Blantyre, it must have been the height of a fantastic summer, for every child attending the Gala, was given a pound, possible due to earlier fundraising!
