Blantyre’s sportsmen and women took a well deserved bow in Blantyre Miner’s Welfare on the second Friday in August 1979.
There was a full house as the Miner’s Welfare presented prizes for all the club activities over the previous year. Amongst the prize winners pictured were outstanding boxer, Billy Johnstone, young boxer Terry McCrory, top goalscorer Steve Young, footballer Eddie Maxwell, and sportsgirl of the year Marie McDermott.
Ex Celtic footballer John Cushley presented the prizes and handing out the boxing prizes was the task of ex European Champion John ‘Cowboy’ McCormack. During the ceremony club officials paid special tribute to football coach Willie Chassels who was leaving to join Blantyre Celtic after 10 years service to the Miners Welfare and boxing professionals and Welfare trainers John McDermott and Jim Melrose.
