Blantyre Round Table held a huge fundraiser in June 1979 for the purposes of raising £3,000 for a new minibus for ‘Meals on Wheels’.

That first Saturday in June saw a family fun day held at Bardykes Farm. “Spot the Personalities” was to be a fun part of the day with a number of well-known people from the world of sport and entertainment mingling with the crowds.

Amongst the guests were John Toye, Comedian Ben Gunn, Walter McGowan and John McClusky from the world of boxing, ex Rangers and Scotland star Bobby Shearer and Rangers Tom Forsyth.

A donkey derby was arranged complete with Tote to give people a ‘betting flutter.’

That year the Round Table officebearers were Chairperson Ron McLelland, Vice Chairman Sandy Wilkie, Secretary Calum Stewart, Treasurer Cameron Russell, Ways and Means Convener Bob Slater, Social & Entertainment Convener Billy Mathieson, Community Services Convenor Robin Douglas and programme Convenor Matt Carney.

Sandy Wilkie Yes, but the most memorable aspect of the day, apart from the fantastic support from Blantyre people who literally turned up in their thousands, was seeing Billy Russell riding a donkey – anyone have any snaps of that? Billy?
