These are the Blantyre lads, whom in July 1978, helped Scotland’s International World Cup Team, “save some face’ that summer, by picking up their own trophy!
Standing at the front is the club’s under 16 Captain Tom McPake who holds aloft the TWO trophies the team brought back from their trip to Gothenburg, Sweden.
Despite a lack of backing initially, the boys had stormed their way to success as “Blantyre & Whitehill Accies”. Tom is holding the under 16s cup and the coveted “Gothia Cup” awarded to the best team of the tournament. As well as this success, some of the boys had also faced the cream of boys European football in the under 13s and under 12s tournaments. A trip back to Europe was immediately planned for the following year to defend the titles.
