Calgary Kilt Skate

One of the best things writing about Blantyre all these years has been establishing a network of colleagues, contacts and friends all over the world who have a connection to Blantyre. That was unexpected and I am often astounded by the interest and attention Blantyre Project posts and books get from abroad.

One such contact is Al Lawrence who lives in Calgary. Al is currently looking into his Blantyre ancestry and we’ve been emailing each other for some time now on and off.

Back on 13th February, we got chatting about the cold weather and Al kindly shared these photos he took in Calgary that day adding, “Today was the Sir John A Macdonald Kilt Skate. It happened today in 6 different cities across Canada. Just a small reminder of our Heritage but probably not a past time in Blantyre.”

I can always tell how fiercely proud people are abroad when talking about their Scottish Ancestry and Heritage and Al, is certainly no exception. I thought I’d share his photos here as a reminder how learning about history can reach out and touch the lives of people far away.
