On 4th October 1860, James Clark of Crossbasket, High Blantyre was one of the subscribers donating heavily to the construction of the Wallace Monument in Stirling.
The Stirling Observer Newspaper thanked everybody who subscribed. The National Wallace Monument (generally known as the Wallace Monument) is a tower standing on the summit of Abbey Craig a hilltop near Stirling in Scotland. It commemorates Sir William Wallace, a 13th-century Scottish hero. Completed in 1869 to the designs of architect John Thomas Rochead at a cost of £18,000. The project, obviously important to James Clark is now iconic on the Stirling landscape.
1861 – On another subject entirely, but still relating to Crossbasket of this era….How times have changed. In The Glasgow Herald on 13th February, an advert was placed by the coachman of Crossbasket, stating he had found a black retriever dog wandering nearby ,asking for the owner to come forward. The advert also gave a warning reading, “If not claimed within eight days, it will be sold to pay expenses.”
