In early November 1928, authorities in this region were looking for a site for a new Maternity Hospital.
Sites at Cambuslang, Larkhall and Bothwell Castle had been considered, but of interest to Blantyre residents at the time was the possible use of the fields around Basket Farm, High Blantyre and grounds of Calderwood Castle.
It was agreed that mining reports should be sought and the sites at Bothwell, Blantyre and Calderwood were quickly dismissed by mining engineers as unsuitable. It is unknown to me where the eventual site was chosen, but I do know that it was not at Hairmyres nor Bellshill at that particular time.
Pictured in 2012, is Basket Farm, just off the A725 East Kilbride Expressway at High Blantyre.
