A previously unseen photo taken in 1923 of Shuttle Row.
What is so noticeable in this photo is just how run down the building is. Indeed it was close to being condemned before the decision to save it and turn it into the museum and memorial. Render falls off the walls, dirt and grime stain the outside walls, perhaps from the muddy entrance roadway, pictured in the foreground complete with horse muck.
The houses are in dire need of attention. The stone steps themselves so worn , they form a U shape. Yet, of course for people there, this was home and I’m sure they would have been proud to live in a building with so much history and character.
