Anecdote from November 1891. In a certain part of Blantyre, a miner, Donald had to go to the store one Saturday night for food. Making his way to Glasgow Road, he found a suitable shop.
Once inside, he gathered up some provisions and took them to the counter. As he waited for the shopkeeper to tell him how much it all was, he noticed the cheese he’d picked up had a good amount of maggots through it.
Taking out his handkerchief and having paid, he wrapped up the provisions into it…..except for the cheese, which was left on the counter.
The shopman piped up, “Are ye not taking yer cheese too? It’s been paid for”
Donald looked at the cheese, “Jist put my address oan in. Ah’m sure it’ll make its own way itself!”
