At end of November 1891, an “Anti Swearing” society was formed in Blantyre. According to Brechin Herald newspaper, the members were fined 6d if they swore. The intention was to create a better society after complaints that foul language was to be heard almost everywhere.
The society relied upon people “self fining” themselves putting away the 6d each time they found themselves cursing. They would then meet at regular intervals and the funds would be collected to help good causes within Blantyre. It was said in the first week alone, the society funds were flourishing!
This seems like the older equivalent of today’s ‘Swear jar’ principle. Tucking away some coins each and every time to try and swear less. I’ve not encountered this society in any other news about Blantyre so i think it was probably short lived!
