On Christmas Eve, 1891, the death took place of Mrs Gardner, the Blantyre Hospital matron.
She had fallen victim to influenza and had been ill for a little while. Mrs Gardner should certainly be remembered. As a nurse, she tended to many Blantyre patients in the former fever hospital (once located near the top of Victoria Street) near its junction with Burnbrae Road.
The hospital during 1891 had been quite full of ill patients suffering from influenza, and the fever had been passed on to her. The increased duties, anxieties and stress had affected her strength and ability to do her job and sadly she died in the very place she had worked in.
Reporters during that festive break, saddened by the news told of her being a kind, helpful and self sacrificing nurse highly esteemed by patients, officials and the public in general.
