In 1892, the breeding of Hackneys was reaching considerable proportions in Scotland.
Hackneys are an elegant high stepping breed of carriage horse which was popular for showing in harness events. Named after the carriages they pulled, this was a horse to show off!
Mr Wardrop Moore at Greenhall House, High Blantyre was known for his love of horses, always seeking to add beautiful animals to his collection at the nearby stables. In April 1892, he purchased at a high price, a beautiful Hackney from Mr James Johnston, Lochburnie. The mare was bred in Norfolk. She was described as an animal of great style and quality and would prove a most valuable asset to Mr Wardrop Moore’s collection. Indeed, reporters described her as one of the most beautiful horses to have been seen in Scotland.
Pictured about 3 decades later actually outside the front door of Greenhall House is one of the Wardrop Moore’s prized horses.
