Scholastic Honours for Blantyre Women, 1892

In Summer 1892, two Blantyre women were recognised Internationally, for their academic talents.

On 22nd July 1892, the Hamilton Herald newspaper noted, “The close of the summer session has just taken place at the Seminary of Notre Dame De Sacré Cœur, Farnboro’, near London, conducted by Les Dames de l’Education Chrétienne, from Argentan, France. The distribution of prizes was conducted by the ex-Empress Eugénie, and Prince Victor Napoleon.”

“Among those successful in gaining prizes and honours we notice the names of Miss Agnes and Miss Cissy M‘Caffrie, daughters of Mr John M‘Caffrie, Springwell Place, Blantyre.”

“Miss Agnes M‘Caffrie was awarded First Prize in the reading and elocutionary competition, and obtained certificates for needlework, French, drawing, physiography and philosophy, being personally complimented by the Empress Eugénie on her success.”

“Miss Cissy M‘Caffrie carried off First Prize in history, geography, grammar, and general English excellence. She also obtained the Special Prize of the Institution for general good conduct and diligence throughout the year. Miss Cissy, in addition, won the Special Prize of the Empress Eugénie given for the same reasons, and which this year takes the form of a magnificent travelling timepiece, bearing a suitable inscription. Miss Cissy has also received what is considered the highest honour in the school, viz., a beautiful wreath in the form of a crown, composed of white immortelles, given annually by the Empress Eugénie to the scholar most distinguished in all branches, and placed upon the brow of the winner by the hands of the august donor herself.”
