G&J MacLachlan’s Castle Stout, 1892

G. & J. Maclachlan’s “CASTLE” STOUT was proudly promoted across Blantyre in the summer of 1892, and indeed for several decades thereafter!

Brewed in Maryhill, Glasgow and in Edinburgh, this celebrated stout was available locally at the “Castle” Vaults in Greenfield and Blantyre, as well as from dealers throughout the town. The advert was striking in its simplicity — no prices, no tasting notes — just confidence in a product already well known to its customers.

A bold closing line on the advert said it all:
“BE SURE YOU ASK FOR IT.”

A reminder of a time when brand loyalty was built face-to-face across pub counters, and when asking by name mattered. #BlantyreHistory #VictorianScotland #OldAdverts #LocalHistory #ScottishBrewing
