Impact of the Blantyre Pit Disaster on 1892 Funds

The annual general meeting of the subscribers to the Blantyre and Udston Accident Funds was held on Wednesday 30th November 1892 in Glasgow. Colonel James Reid of Wellfield presiding. It had been 15 years since the Blantyre Pit Disaster and as was the custom each year, the report was assessed to see what had been spent, and what remained.

The fifteenth report of the Blantyre Fund stated that the number of persons who had ‘gone off’the fund in the course of the past year was 5, namely, 1 widow and 4 other adult recipients who had died. Three persons had been added to the list of recipients during that year, and three families had been temporarily assisted by the fund. During 1892, the number of persons on the fund receiving aid was 71, namely, 40 widows, 29 other adults, and 2 children.

Since the accident, £39,977 10s 9d had been spent for the benefit of the recipients, and there still remained available for them £27,559 5s 7d. On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Colonel Austin, the report was adopted.

These funds, a considerable sum at that time, must have greatly assisted those people on the list, though would have been little comfort compared to the grief and loss they had suffered.
