On Tuesday 6th December 1892, the local Blantyre merchants hosted their much-anticipated annual dance at Struthers’ Masonic Hall in High Blantyre — and what a night it was!
The hall was beautifully decorated for the occasion, with over 40 couples gracefully “tripping the light fantastic toe” to the lively sounds of Bergman’s Band. 🎶
🎤 Michael Paton served as the charismatic Master of Ceremonies, with the evening’s promenade stylishly led by Mr Oliver and Miss Robertson. Guests were treated to delightful pianoforte selections by Miss Bessie Fullarton and Miss Rankin, both playing with “considerable taste”.
A highlight of the night came when young Master John McCaffrie performed a hornpipe dance with such flair, it rivalled the earlier display by Mr James Clark!
This glittering event was described at the time as not only the largest but also the most successful gathering ever held under the auspices of Blantyre’s local merchants.
✨ A truly magical night from Blantyre’s past which would have been amazing to go back and see! A.I imagines the scene.
