Looking through notes of a County Council Meeting in November 1892, there were a few interesting things noteworthy in Blantyre at the time. It’s interesting to imagine what Blantyre would have looked like at this time. Though other matters were also discussed, there were 8 talking points about Blantyre:
- Of the 40 dairies in Blantyre inspected, a report from earlier in the year suggested that Blantyre diaries were of the utmost cleanliness by comparison to other surrounding towns. Nothing could be found with any of the milk, the farmers all knowing exactly how to to run their business to the protection of the general public.
- Dixons Pits in High Blantyre had asked for a separate supply of water from one of the upper reservoirs. This was granted and put right for £120.
- The sewer pipe on what was to become Main Street at Causesystanes had subsided and had to be relaid.
- Improvements were made that year to the widening of the road at Barnhill and at the Blantyre Churchyard.
- Mr Craig had worked hard to get a footpath installed from High Blantyre to Larkfield (in what would become Broompark Road)
- The council had purchased a steam roller, in the hope that it would help flatten many public roads.
- There was a growing problem of the removal of ‘Blantyre filth’ from open cess pits.
- Councillors were debating how far pigs should be kept from houses after some complaints about smells.
