Some history in other parts of Scotland. Extra content! In the 1600s, Scotland was torn by religious conflict as kings tried to force changes on the Scottish Kirk. Thousands of Scots signed the National Covenant in 1638, pledging to defend their faith against interference from the Crown.
These Covenanters faced brutal persecution for refusing to abandon their Presbyterian beliefs. Secret gatherings, known as Conventicles, were held in fields and glens, watched over by lookouts as they worshipped under threat of arrest.
Many were captured, imprisoned, executed, or shipped as slaves. The era became known as the “Killing Time.” Yet, the Covenanters’ struggle shaped Scotland’s religious identity, echoing in its churches and freedoms today.
✊ Was their sacrifice worth the price of faith?
