Continuing a look at the opening of the Burleigh Church on Saturday, 3rd December 1892. Then, called Blantyre United East Free Church.
Following the official opening on that Saturday, the opening celebrations continued when the first service was held the following day. The newspaper reporter comments,
“The opening services were continued on Sabbath, when the pulpit was occupied in the forenoon by the Rev. Mr Burleigh, pastor of the church; in the afternoon by the Rev. Dr Wallace, Hamilton; and in the evening by the Rev. T. M. B. Paterson, West Free Church, Hamilton. The attendance at all the diets of worship, notwithstanding the unfavourable weather, was exceedingly good.”
“The excellent services rendered by the choir, under the able conductorship of Mr T. Roberts, have been most favourably remarked upon by many. The total opening collections amounted to £50. Evangelistic services have been held in the new church each night this week, and have been addressed by Rev. Messrs Muir, Glasgow; Fletcher, Bothwell; M’Dougall, Coatbridge; and Campbell, Blantyre. The seat-letting committee have had a very busy week, and everything augurs well for the future of the congregation.”
