With quite a lot of new followers to Blantyre Project, I’ve recently been asked what is Blantyre most famous for? Well, it surely must be David Livingstone. Born in 1813 in a humble one-room home in Blantyre, David Livingstone would become one of the world’s most renowned explorers and missionaries. By day, he worked in the local cotton mill; by night, he studied medicine and theology, his determination unstoppable.
He went on to explore Africa’s uncharted interior, mapping rivers, battling illness, and campaigning fiercely against the slave trade. His encounters were legendary, including the famous “Dr Livingstone, I presume?” moment with journalist Henry Stanley.
Though controversial in parts of his legacy, Livingstone’s story began right here in Lanarkshire—and changed global history, with the best place to explore that at the world class museum at David Livingstone Birthplace at Station Road, Blantyre.
🌍 How did this Blantyre mill boy change the world? From humble beginnings at Blantyre Mills to the vast backdrops of African skies. Drop by the museum to find out!
