This bank opened in Blantyre on Tuesday 2nd May 1893. With adverts placed into the Hamilton Advertiser newspaper, the Stonefield branch initially opened for 3 days a week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays.
The office was situated at a place convenient for both High Blantyre and Low Blantyre residents, situated on the Glasgow Road, directly opposite the junction of Station Road.
The People’s Bank of Scotland was established not for the gentry, but instead to give access to banking to the middle classes and at the same time with a focus on providing services suitable for saving.
The bank opened with 3% interest rate on savings, not too far from savings accounts these days. The only condition of these type of accounts was to give the bank one month’s notice for any withdrawals. The adverts and articles of the day had high hopes many people would become customers.
