Glasgow Celtic vs Blantyre Vics, 1893

On the evening of Monday 14th August 1893, football clubs made the most of the light nights and set up a fantastic football game to thrill spectators.

It was the turn of Glasgow Celtic to visit Blantyre, coming to Forrest Street to visit new club, Blantyre Victoria. Highlighted players in Celtic were Reynolds, Cullen, Dunbar, Curran, Kelly and Gallacher. Blessington, Davidson, McMahon, Campbell and Cassels. Reporters covered the event as follows:

“From the off, it was evident the game was to be a one sided one. McMahon giving some fine examples of dribbling and Gallacher was in excellent form. The game was 2 x 35 minutes and at half time the score was Celtic 2 – Blantyre Victoria 0. During the second half, Victoria were a no show. The game resulted Celtic 3 – Victoria 0.”

How great it would be to be amongst the spectators of that old game, just for the match before a quick trip back to the present!

AI imaginatively illustrates the scene. (though a bit over-ambitious with the Vics stand!!)
