Fall from a Chimney, 1893

A wee snippet of Blantyre news from 131 years ago. On the afternoon of 22nd August 1893, an accident occurred in Church Street, which left a man injured.

James Lyon, a stonemason employed at Orchardhead, High Blantyre had a narrow escape. He had been in the act of building a chimney on a new house at Church Street, just off the Glasgow Road, when a stone on which he had placed his foot, gave way. He fell right down the roof, dropped off the end and down 20 foot landing on a fence at the back of the house.

Dr Crawford attended and found the man incredibly only had bruising and a swollen foot. He actually managed to hobble to the train station and go home. It’s my understanding James was employed by Aitkenhead builders.

Ai imagines the scene.
