It was prize time for some Blantyre youngsters at the end of July 1977 at the Blantyre Miners’ Welfare Club. The winners of the youth sports section were present at a special awards evening organised by the club on the last Friday of that month in Victoria Street, Blantyre.
Over 140 guests watched the winners get their prizes from professional boxer, Charlie Malarkey. Among the winners were: John Smith, footballer of the year; Hugh Kelly, best boxer of the year, Cathleen Brown, sportswoman of the year and David McCreadie, best young boxer of the year.
