World leaders and royalty met with D-Day veterans today to honour their sacrifice in World War Two and remember those who died.
Events took place in France and the UK to mark the 80th anniversary of the Allied invasion of France.
On 6 June 1944, tens of thousands of soldiers landed on five beaches in Normandy, northern France, their bravery and sacrifices bringing about the beginning of the end of Hitler’s tyranny and giving us the freedoms we have today.
Five years ago, over 250 veterans attended the services on these beaches. Today, as the elderly soldiers are fewer, there were now only 23. We’re quickly getting to a point where those who took part in this conflict are all gone.
The landings were the start of the campaign to liberate Nazi-occupied north-western Europe. It’s difficult to believe on the opposite side of Europe, in 2024 on European soil, another invading force has marched into an democratic, European Country 80 years on and war is still raging needlessly, fuelled by the greed of a corrupt, power and land hungry dictatorship. It saddens me to my core.
May all those affected by illegal conflict all over the world, soon have the peace they need and deserve.
