This little amusing story made a newspaper snippet in December 1894. Worth retelling here if only to put a smile on faces.
A Blantyre collier’s wife was walking to the pit one slushy, damp morning that month. Her intention was to get to the pit to give her husband a piece for lunch. At High Blantyre, taking a short cut, she decided to cross a muddy field and was very quickly met with the annoyed farmer.
Determined to put a stop to trespassing in general on his land, he piped up. “This isnae a road”, said the farmer to the women who had by now stopped in her tracks..
“Ah well”, came her audacious reply as she looked down at the slushy track. “Onybody kin see that, an’ if ye don’t put ashes on it tae make it presentable, ah’ll likely no be back!”
Probably not the desired conversation the farmer expected!
