Another interesting Summer excursion described in 1895, this time an outing by the children of the former Blantyre Works Sabbath School, pictured here.

The children were associated with the Primitive Methodist Church who were using this school/chapel building at the time. On Saturday 8th June 1895, their annual outing destination was Strathaven.
The Band of the E.U Church was in attendance and a party of over 300 people left from Low Blantyre Station. They proceeded to a farm at Netherfield where a supply of buns and milk awaited them. The youngsters then appreciated the usual races and prize giving.
As this was happening, the older members of the party used the occasion to visit Strathaven Castle and other places of Interest. This previously unseen photo of the castle in the era is amongst a collection shared with Blantyre Project, photographed by Victorian photographer, David Ritchie.

Before leaving the field, the children gave a hearty vote of thanks to the farmer for using the field. All arrived back safely at 8pm at Blantyre Station having had a wonderful day out.
