I don’t have a date when the County refuse was created at Auchentibber, but suspect it was just after WW2. However, I do know that in April 1977, it was announced that the rubbish tip was declared full and that the Council were seeking a new location and new tip.
This was all before proper recycling. Many residents used the tip at Hillhouse in the 1970s and into the 80’s before the current recycling depot at Priestfield Industrial Estate was created.
What can you tell me about the tip at Acuhentibber? I only have early childhood memories of this, but can’t really remember much. Photo for illustration only.

Jim Brown We used to hide in the bushes at Sydes Brae and jump on the back of the bin lorries (they had steps back then) and get a trip up to the tip which was half way up the old road to Broomhouse Farm (entrance next to Auchentibber School) Occasionally go into the tip (now a tree plantation) and look for luckies., but mostly try and get a lift back down.
Alan Baird i could point out at least at least 6 tips in and around auchentibber.

Elaine Speirs My Dad used to come home with stuff – broken hoovers that he fixed and gave away to people. He stood in a pile of rotten fish once and trailed it through the house.

Duncan Slater I remember the tip down at the Clyde, not sure the road but you went under a bridge and the public park was on the left.

Ste Mcgowan Sinerator on Hillhouse road ya mean? I remember both them as stayed in Hillhouse but always in Blantyre as that’s where my dad was from and loads of family there back then and still now.
James Stirling I can remember the tip in the fifties at auchintibber,there was also a bigger one at the bad bend when you go up by the war monument.
Colin Stewart There was one at the end of Muttonhole Road at Newhousemill Road which used to be an old reservoir, then used for landfill. There was one down at the bottom of the Palace Grounds near the Clyde before the build the M74 motorway.
