1860’s Bothwell Castle

This early photograph is thought to be from the 1860’s, over 150 years ago. Pictured by an unknown photographer, the Blantyre side of the River Clyde is on the left. Bothwell Castle ruins at the back.

This is a rather wintry picture. No leaves on the trees, it’s a cold looking scene. When zooming in, I noticed some fallen trees toppled over the small riverside paths, which would certainly have made Victorian riverside rambling more difficult.

This was a time before coal pits were sunk in Blantyre. The village itself at the time heavily dependent upon weaving and the Blantyre Mills.
