A story now from 128 years ago tonight. On Thursday 26th December, Boxing Day, 1895 High Blantyre’s Parish Church held their sabbath school soiree. (To you and I, that’s their Sunday School Party!)
The event took place that evening in the upstairs Masonic Hall on Main Street and in conjunction with the Band of Hope Soiree. It was extremely well attended by many families with Rev Charles S Turnbull overseeing the festive entertainment.
In these days before movies, cinema, radio or TV, folks looked forward to lantern view showings, the lights dimmed with lime light views, presenting views of Egyptian adventures. Each static, interesting scene was ably described by Mr Ferguson. Songs and recitations were later given making up a most enjoyable entertaining programme for the season. Votes of thanks were given at the end of the night.
As we sit in our homes this Boxing night or perhaps out and about, this story reminds us of simpler times as communities joined in common celebration. AI pictures the scene.
