Calderwood Castle

This photo taken by David Ritchie dates from the first decade of the 20th Century, making it now well over 110 years old. From a vantage point in the Rotten Calder River, it looks back on the former Calderwood Castle. The Blantyre side of the riverbank being on the right.

At the time this was taken, the Co-Operative Society had not long taken ownership of the building. The photo is in sufficient detail to be able to zoom in on the property to see a little more detail.

I’m unsure if this photo was taken from the riverbank, or perhaps a little bridge, as it looks like it was set up from the mid point of the river. Calderwood Castle is of course no longer here. Another great building which would have made a fantastic museum, now lost.
